Scientific activities

Over 20+ years of my scientific career I have been dealing with various themes and I have been involved in solving different problems. I am member of the Modelling and optimization group at University of Belgrade, Faculty of Mathematics.

I spent the period between February 2018. and October 2018. as a Visiting Fellow at Department for Computer Science, Systems and Communications , on University Milano-Bicocca, Milano, Italy. In joint work with collegues from AlgoLab research group, we developed novel metaheuristics for some important problems in Bioinformatics, such as cancer evolution interference, alternative splicing prediction and haplotype assembly.

Memberhip in scientific organizations

Participation in scientific projects

Since 1993. until now, (except one year, when I was on unpaid leave - I spent that year in the USA) I work as a researcher on several projects funded by Ministry of Science, Technology and Development, Republic of Serbia.

I am cureently involved in IDEJE project 7754217: READ DM1 - biomedical project studying the molecular basis of individual differences in myotonic dystrophy type 1. Project is coordinated University of Belgrade, Faculty of Biology and supported by the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia within the IDEA program. The aim of the project is understanding the dynamics of repeat motif expansion and phenotypic variability in myotonic dystrophy type 1 through patient studies, nanopore sequencing and cell models. Detailed informations are given on the web site of the project.

I worked on project 174010: Mathematical models and opimizational methods for large-scale systems. Project is coordinated by Mathematical Institute in Serbia Academy of Science and Art. The main goal of project research is consideration of real-word large scale systems that needs to be improved using mathematics and optimization methods. Such large scale systems appear in industry, telecommunication, transportation, medicine, electronics, education, chemistry, in public and private sector, etc. In the process of getting good solution, there are some steps, common for all kind of problems mentioned.

Those steps are:

  1. modeling, or extracting from the reality important components and make symbolic or mathematical model of the problem;
  2. find numerical solution method(s);
  3. make computer implementation of the methods;
  4. iterate previous steps until decision maker is happy with the final solution.

Most of real word problems belong to the areas of combinatorial and global optimization. More precisely, they may include integer, Boolean 0-1, and/or continues variables. In addition, such problems might be linear or non-linear. Thus, the model may belong to mixed integer linear or nonlinear programming.

However, most of them are NP-hard so there is no exact solution method that could solve the problem in reasonable time. Since there are usually a huge number of unknown variables and constraints, in the forefront will be the development of heuristics based on some metaheuristics principle. They do not ensure finding an optimal solution, but approximate one, in reasonable computing time. Our attention will be mostly focused on Variable neighborhood search (VNS), Genetic algorithms (GA) and Electromagnetism-like (EM) metaheuristics.

In addition to designing heuristics based on VNS and GA for many classical combinatorial and global optimization problems, we will develop their methodological and theoretical properties. We also plan to work on exact solution methods simultaneously.
